Probably will still save money buying from a reputable seller on EBay or Swappa but it’s another option. I’ve heard good things about 2018-2020 models but again they are now all USB-C and will be by far the most expensive second-hand models.Īlso I’m not sure if they have this in the UK but Apple gives a discount for students and they also have their own refurbished store. I believe in 2016 is when they started changing over to thunderbolt 3 aka USB C ports, which if you get the right cables isn’t a problem but I wanted the ease-of-use of OG USB ports and no adapters/hubs (which you don’t want to cheap out on a USB hub, they can cause electrical issues). I believe the 2012-2015 MBP retinas are mostly the same but I heard to avoid 2013-2014 models as there were overheating issues with the then-new Iris Graphics. I use Logic with hardware and software, I’ve done tracks recently where I had a live drummer playing over a section I looped doing 20+ takes per session and it always kept up and seamlessly switches between tracks/takes. Most of the newer MBPs for the price you listed I think only have 8gb ram and I’m not so sure you can upgrade them yourself now. I only got 256gb so I saved money there but it’s lightning fast and still has USB 3.0. I found a 2012 MBP Retina with 16gb ram and a core i7, excellent cosmetic condition for less than $600 in the US.
